At the end of a long dreary day, driving hundreds of miles into the dark, we searched in vain for a hotel, nothing in sight. (This was before smart phones. Had no sleeping bags. Would we have to sleep in the car?) My husband doggedly drove our family onward.
The vibe was bleak exhaustion and despair.
We’ve got to shift this vibe, I thought.
At a truck stop, my 12-year-old daughter and I went to the restroom together.
After we washed our hands, I said, “Honey, let’s turn this day around.”
I took her hands in mine. “Let’s imagine ourselves in a clean luxurious hotel, with the most delicious sheets and covers, perfect air conditioning, everything we like. Feel how comfy and cozy it is.”
Eyes shut, we swooned with good feelings.
“Yes,” I said. “Let’s get back in the car and keep feeling this. We’re a team!”
So… You know, of course, that within the next half-hour, we found a delightful place to stay. It was high luxury, beyond a typical night.
Coincidence? I think not.
Attitude is everything, as we often say.
Sure, life is a roller coaster, and we can’t stay “up” all the time.
But we have the ability to lighten up when we want to do so.
Last year, a friend showed me the work of Florence Scovel Shinn, a brilliant wisdom teacher from 100 years ago. She was a popular writer about the power of thought. (Now called the Law of Attraction.)
Florence also conveys a lot of trust in the benevolent divine universe.
Her first book, The Game of Life and How to Play It (1925), is inspiring, brilliant, and engaging, with entertaining stories of real people who, by their words, thoughts and attitudes, helped make their dreams come true, or not.
It’s a fun little read of about 100 pages.
The e-book is free on Google Play. There’s also an audiobook of Game of Life on YouTube.
When we’re down in the dumps, it’s hard to relate to positive thinking, hard to relate to gratitude.
But the bottom line is, gratitude works.
Counting our blessings does pull us out of the ditch.
As we focus on what feels good, we magnetize more good-feeling moments to ourselves.
Here are my favorite quotes and affirmations from Florence Scovel Shinn:
Owing to the vibratory power of words, whatever man voices, he begins to attract.
The imagination has been called, “The Scissors of The Mind,” and it is ever cutting, cutting, day by day, the pictures man sees there, and sooner or later he meets his own creations in his outer world.
Gratitude is the law of increase, and complaint is the law of decrease.
Change your thoughts, and in the twinkling of an eye, all your conditions change. Your world is a world of crystallized ideas, crystallized words. Sooner or later, you reap the fruits of your words and thoughts.
There is no there – there is only here. You must live fully in the now to make your dreams come true.
Fear and impatience demagnetize. Poise magnetizes.
Divine Love now dissolves and dissipates every wrong condition in my mind, body and affairs.
Unexpected doors fly open, and endless avalanches of abundance are poured out upon me, under grace in perfect ways.
Infinite Spirit, reveal to me the way; tell me if there is anything for me to do.
Never violate a hunch.
Never do today what intuition says to do tomorrow.
I have a magical work in a magical way. I give magical service for magical pay.
Unforgiveness is the most prolific cause of disease.
The marvelous thing is, that if one blesses a man, he has no power to harm him.
You must form the habit of living in the fourth dimension, “The World of the Wondrous,” where you do not judge by appearances.
I cast this burden on the Christ within, and I go free, to be loving, harmonious, happy.
Divine Love floods my being with health.
Every cell in my body is filled with light.
Infinite Spirit, open the way for my great abundance. I am an irresistible magnet for all that belongs to me by Divine Right.
When one has made his demands upon the Universal, he must be ready for surprises. Everything may seem to be going wrong, when in reality, it is going right.
Love and good-will destroy the enemies with one’s self, therefore, one has no enemies on the external! There is peace on earth for him who sends good-will to man!
My word is my wand, filled with magic and power!
